About Activity

Prashar lake trek is one of the most beautiful weekend treks. Since it provides a breathtaking panoramic view of the Himalayan ranges, it makes this trek stand out from the rest. One can clearly see Dhauladar ranges, Rohtang Pass, mountain ranges of Kinnaur and Shimla from the top. Prashar lake is named after the sage Prashar who meditated here in ancient times.
Dedicated to sage Prashar, there is also a temple beside the oval-shaped
lake. The temple is a great example of brilliant architectural design. The lake is famous for the small circular island on its surface, which mysteriously keeps changing its location from time to time. According to locals, they keep seeing the island at the same location for months in a row and then it suddenly changes several times within a month.

Since early 2000, tourists and pilgrims are not allowed to go near the lake, to protect its ecological balance. Hence, they have installed a fence along the circumference of the lake, which no one is allowed to cross.

Day 01: Mandi to Bandi by shared Taxi (1.5 hrs) and Trek from Bandi to Prashar Lake (7kms or 5 hours)

  • Since it is a long trek on day 1, pickup is made early from Mandi bus stand at 06:30 am. From Mandi, its 1.5 hour drive through National Highway 21 till Hanogi and then through link road to Bandi village (Transportation charges are included in the package).
  • We will have breakfast and get packed lunch at Bandi village, around 45 km from Mandi. Post-briefing, the trek starts at around 10 am and it takes around 4-6 hours to reach Prashar lake.
  • The first half of the trek is a bit steep and moves through the forest which is rich with pine, oaks, rhododendrons trees and few shrubs.
  • After crossing through the forest, one starts to get the sight of snow-capped Himalayan ranges from Shimla towards the east, Kinnaur and Rohtang Pass in the north and Dhauladhar range towards the west. We would attain a height of 2700 metres after which its mostly flat with a descent of approximately 50 metres stretched over 2 kilometres.
  • The tiredness of trekking will be completely forgotten with the sight of awe-inspiring Lake from the top! Night shelter would be in form of tents pitched on a flat area from where one can get a clear view of the lake. (Many times NGT bans camping near Prashar Lake. In this case, the stay would be in form of rooms in Prashar lake premises. These are big rooms where we would provide beddings and sleeping bags. One room can accommodate 5-6 people)
  • Interested people can also visit the temple. Snacks would be served at 4 pm in addition to soup later in the evening. There would be a bonfire after sunset if weather permits and then dinner would be served at around 8 pm.

Day 02: Trek from Prashar Lake to Baggi (7 km or 4 hours) and Baggi to Mandi by Shared Taxi (1 hour)

  • The day starts with tea at 6:30 am followed by yoga. One can get soaked in the Himalayas with some breathing and stretching exercises.
  • After the yoga, breakfast would be served at 8 am. After that everyone would be given a demo on tent pitching, choosing a campsite in case one needs to trek solo in future, folding the tents, how to pack sleeping bags etc.
  • After getting packed lunch, the trek starts at 10 am from Prashar Lake towards Baggi village which is on opposite side of Bandi village, starting point of the trek. This day is a steep descent of 975 metres through dense forest which can take 3-4 hours.
  • There is a water source towards the second half of trek from where trekkers can fill water bottles. Baggi is situated beside a natural rivulet which was formed as a result of floods encountered in 2011-12.
  • Everyone would be moved in pre-arranged cabs from Baggi village towards Mandi. After final briefing, and thanks note, trekkers would be dropped at Mandi bus stand (Transportation is included in the package).
