About Activity

Roopkund, in the state of Uttarakhand in India, is a well-known glacial lake. This lake is famous because of more than five hundred skeletons of humans that are found at the edge of the lake. It is situated in the Himalayas and rests at an altitude of nearly 4,800 meters. Roopkund is in the Chamoli district of Garhwal. It is considered as one of the best trails for trekking in Garhwal region. It is closer to hill stations like Nainital and Kathgodam.

At a distance of 217 km from Nainital and 235 km from Kathgodam, Roopkund is one of the chief adventure attractions for people in the country and for the people who love trekking. Roopkund, which is in the lap of Trishul massif is also known as the ‘mystery lake’. The best time to visit here is May Last Week-June and September-October.

The Roopkund trek begins in the town of Loharjung and takes you through mountains replete with rich biodiversity and picturesque surroundings. Deep virgin forests, gurgling brooks, breath-taking campsites, miles of undulating meadows, snow and ice, and the taste of a great adventure as you climb from 8,000 ft to 16,000 ft in 8 days. The Roopkund trek is also called Skeleton Trek because of the presence of different skeletons in and near the lake. The lake is bounded by snow clad mountains and rock- strewn glaciers.

Trekking here is an adventurous journey which passes via various exotic and beautiful locations. As you trek towards the lake, you would see lush green grassy land and conifer forest ranging towards the fall of hills. After that, the trek takes its way along the Pindar River. You can take pleasure in the natural and lush green beauty of the surroundings with the pleasant breeze that blows all around you, giving a soothing effect to your senses.


Itinerary

Day 01: Kathgodam to Loharjung

After you arrive in Kathgodam, our representative will pick you up from station and proceed towards Loharjung. From Kathgodam, you will travel through the scenic hilly routes in order to reach your destination. On arriving in this little village, you can check out the village and stay overnight so that we can start our trek next day.

Day 02: Loharjung to Didna village

Post breakfast we will start our trek towards Didna village. You start climbing from an altitude of 10500 feet and trek through a picturesque forest comprising Himalayan cedar and oak trees. This trail is a combination of steep ascents and descents. The trail through lovely oak and rhododendron forests is a pleasure for the eyes. We will reach Didna Village by evening and camp there. Trek from Loharjung to Didna village is around 8 km.

Day 03: Didna village to Ali Bugyal

After having breakfast in the morning, we will start our trek towards Ali Bugyal. The hike today will be through thick forests and open grasslands for around 5 kms and will take around 3 to 4 hours to compete. You will reach Ali Bugyal where you will find acres of open meadows. Camp overnight at Ali Bugyal with bonfire and dinner.

 Day 04: Ali Bugyal to Patar Nachauni   

 Today we will go on a trek which is an easy climb following by a gradual descent to Pathar Nachauni which takes about 4 hours to complete via Bedni Bugyal. On a clear day, the view from this trail is very beautiful. We will camp at Pathar Nachauni for the night.

Day 05: Patar Nachauni to Bhagwabhasa

Today the trek starts off with a walk, followed by a steep ascent to Kalu Vinayak Temple and then a gradual descent to Bhagwabhasa. The oxygen level in the air goes down as you climb uphill by the minute, so ascend as slow as possible, to acclimatize better. Just as we finish the climb from Ghora Lotani, we’ll reach Kalu Vinayak Temple, where there’s a shrine of Lord Ganesh. Bhagwabhasa is 2 km from here, following an easy, gradual descent. There will be snow on this trail. We will reach Bhagwabhasa and camp there. The nights get tremendously cold and windy so it’s better if you keep warm clothes in handy.

Day 06: Bhagwabhasa to Roopkund lake and back to Bedni Bugyal

Early morning, we trek uphill for 5 km towards Roopkund and will take around 3hours to reach. Roopkund is at 16,000 feet. We need to climb down 250 feet to reach the edge of the lake. Then we will start our return after breakfast at Roopkund. It will take 3 hours to reach Bhagwabhasa. Then 3 hour descend from Bhagwabhasa to Bedni Bugyal via Pathar Nachauni. We will camp at Bedni Bugyal for the night.

Day 07: Bedni Bugyal to Wan –Drive to Loharjung

After having our breakfast, we start our 10km trek which will take around 5 hours all the way to Wan and drive to Loharjung. The trek is via the meadows of Bedni Bugyal and then by the forests over Wan. We will stop to take in the view at Ghairoli Patal, from where we will get astounding views of Mt. Trishul. From the bridge, it’s a half hour climb to Wan and then an hour’s drive to Loharjung and camp there for the night.

Day 08: Loharjung to Kathgodam

 

After breakfast, we start our drive from Loharjung in the morning. It will take around 11 hours to reach Kathgodam. Expected to reach Kathgodam by 7 pm.

Cancellation Policy

  • Cancellations prior to 30 days from the start of the trek: You can either transfer the same trek to any of your friends/family or get a voucher for the same amount and register for any of our treks in future (validity 1 year) Or Get a refund of 90% (If the trek amount varies, the balance needs to be paid by the Trekker)
  • Cancellation between 30 days and 15 days to the start of the trek: You can either choose to go for any other trek or other batches for the same trek depending on availability, Or Get a refund of 75%
  • Cancellation between 15 days and 10 days to the start of the trek: You can choose to go on the same trek with other batches in the same season Or Get a refund of 50%
  • Cancellation less than 10 days to the start of the trek: You can transfer your trek to your friend/family (same trek), No cash refund

Note:

  • In case of transferring a trek to a friend, he/she should satisfy all the mandatory requirements by Adventurescape.
  • Change of batches depends on the availability in the trek.
  • Adventurescape holds the right to change/cancel the policies, without prior notice.

Things to Remember

  • Please keep your personal items to a minimum (besides the essentials) so that your bag (No hard shells please) is light and easy to carry. An extra day pack is a must to carry your camera, packed lunch and water bottle.
  • Good footwear is very important – most trails in the Indian Himalayas are pretty rough and steep so a good pair of shoes is important. Socks, both for walking and a pair of warm ones for keeping feet warm inside the tent at night, is a good bet. It’s important to bring a broken in shoe, ratherthan
  • a brand new one which could cause severe blisters.
  • It's best to carry your belongings in a large, tough duffel bag or a big rucksack. A bum /waist bag is handy to have your camera, film rolls, flashlights (handy when visiting monasteries /temples) and a guidebook when you are sightseeing. Pack similar things such as clothes, washing things, camping equipment etc. in separate stuff sacks or polythene bags so they are easier to pull out and add to the waterproofing in your bag. 
  • It is advisable to keep a buffer day for unpredictable weather /road conditions in the mountains.
  • Please do not litter. Avoid bringing plastic bags for the trek.
  • Please inform us in advance if you want porter for your personal baggage. Additional charges will be levied.
  • Trekkers must exhibit kindness and sensitivity towards all animals that they stumble upon during the trek.
  • While travelling through the local villages and hamlets, respect towards the local cultural ethos must be adhered to.
